La banda se formó en Raleigh, Carolina del Norte, en octubre de 2004 por el guitarrista Shawn Milke, el guitarrista Patrick Thompson, el vocalista Dennis Lee (nacido en Winstom Salem, Carolina del Norte el año 1987), y el bajista Steven Tomany. Alesana rápidamente escaló en la escena Post-Hardcore de Raleigh. El 2005 firmo con el sello Tragic Hero Records.
Su nombre se debe a el lugar donde hacian sus ensayos, la calle Alice-anna en Raleigh.
